The United Nations Human Rights Council, which has been discussing the continuing fighting in the Sudanese region of Darfur, has come under strong pressure to take action.

It is reported that there has been resistance from African leaders at the meeting in Geneva to condemning the Sudanese government despite clear evidence of its involvement in atrocities in Darfur.

The UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, said it was essential that the council sends a clear and united signal to stop the violence.

The council's President, Luis Alfonso de Alba, said it hoped to send a fact-finding mission of investigators to Darfur.
