At least 60 people have been killed and 221 wounded in two co-ordinated bomb blasts in central Baghdad.

It is understood a car bomb exploded in the Tayran Square area at about 7am, prompting crowds of day labourers and stall holders to take shelter on the other side of the square.

Two minutes later a truck ploughed into the crowd and exploded.

Tayran Squareh is a popular gathering point for Shia workers from Sadr City, who frequent the cafes and street vendors while waiting for the chance of some work.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has described the attack as a 'horrible massacre'.

It is the latest in a series of attacks in the same area of the city this year.

Separately, South Africa's Foreign Ministry has confirmed that four South African security workers have been kidnapped north of Baghdad.
