The US military says it has killed 20 suspected al-Qaeda militants in a ground and air assault in central Iraq.
But local officials say more than two dozen civilians, including women and children, were killed in the strike.
In Basra, more than 1,000 Danish and UK troops stormed homes in a raid the British military described as the biggest of its kind in southern Iraq.
