Over 100 jobs are to be created as part of a new €10 million investment by Irish company Smarthomes.

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern was due to officially open Smarthomes' new headquarters in Dundalk earlier this afternoon.

50 people are already employed by the company, which manufactures cabling solutions for new homes.

The additional jobs will come on stream over three years and a high proportion will be high-skilled, requiring technical, electronic, research, sales and marketing qualifications.

Mr Ahern said the jobs announcement was 'tremendous' news for Dundalk and said the success of Smarthomes and other Irish entrepreneurial companies was 'a foundation stone of Ireland's remarkable economic performance over the last ten years'.

The company hopes the investment will help it to establish a presence next year in the UK, where it is expected in excess of 150,000 new homes will be built.

Its target market is almost exclusively builders and developers in the new build residential sector.
