Tornado hits street in north London

Hundreds of people have been left homeless after a tornado hit a residential area in north London.

Six people were injured and millions of pounds worth of damage was caused. 24 houses were left uninhabitable.

One house had its roof completely ripped off while another had an exterior wall demolished.

Eyewitnesses told how the sky went dark, there was a noise like a jet engine, and a column of debris swept through the streets as the tornado struck.

Six people have been treated for injuries. The emergency services said all of the injuries were minor.

London Fire Brigade said it had sent 11 fire crews and around 50 firefighters to the scene.

The Association of British Insurers said it was too early to calculate the cost of damage caused by the tornado.
