NI parties prepare policies for incoming govt

Stormont - Rescheduled talks
Stormont - Rescheduled talks

The first meeting of the four main parties in Northern Ireland in a programme for government format is continuing at Stormont.

The main task of the 10-member committee is to agree a programme for the Assembly, which is due to be installed on 26 March.

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams is attending the talks and the DUP is represented by its deputy leader, Peter Robinson.

The ten Assembly members were due to hold their first discussions last month but that meeting was postponed after a row over when the parties should pledge their support for the police.

As a result of legislation published by the British government last week, Sinn Féin has been given space to deal with that issue in the coming months.

Today's meeting gives all the parties the chance to explore if there is a general commitment to the principle of power-sharing.

The Ulster Unionist and SDLP leaders are also attending the talks.
