The Government today held a special meeting in Dublin to discuss a number of issues before next month's Budget.

Minister for Finance Brian Cowen announced on Thursday that the Government plans to increase spending by over €4billion for public services in 2007.

The proposed increase brings overall pre-budget spending to just over €54 billion.

It provides for an additional allocation of €14 billion on health and social welfare and almost €8 billion on education.
