US President, George W Bush has been holding talks with regional leaders in Vietnam in an effort to boost support for sanctions against North Korea.

Over a bilateral breakfast meeting, he urged South Korean President Roh Moo-Hyun to implement the sanctions and also support the US-led Proliferation Security Initiative.

The PSI is a voluntary programme designed to prevent the trafficking of material for weapons of mass destruction.

Tomorrow Mr Bush will meet leaders of China and Russia.

The US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has called on North Korea to follow Vietnam's example by putting the war behind it.

APEC leaders meeting in Vietnam

At the summit, APEC leaders have said they would remain 'personally involved' to secure a breakthrough in the deadlock in the Doha round of global trade talks.

In a statement issued on the first of a two-day summit, leaders of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum promised to make 'real cuts' in industrial tariffs, and establish new openings in services trade.

World Trade Organization talks collapsed in July after countries failed to reach agreement on subsidies.
