Changes have been announced to the way teachers are allocated which could benefit schools in developing areas.
The changed criteria will affect small schools that see a strong increase in enrolment numbers.
The number of teachers a school gets in a given year is based on enrolment figures for the previous September.
Until now, small schools needed 25 additional pupils before they became entitled to an extra teacher. That figure has now been reduced to 15.
However, the principal of a school in Co Kildare has told RTÉ News that the changes will make no difference to them.
Scoil Mhuire in Newbridge is one of six Catholic schools in the area that has had to close enrolment because they say they cannot cope with the large numbers applying during the school year.
Principal Brian O'Reilly said that under the revised arrangements his school would still not get an extra teacher.
He also said that his school, like many others, has no space to accommodate an extra teacher.
