The Internet search engine, Google, has announced the creation of 500 jobs at its European headquarters in Dublin.

The company already employs more than 800 people in its offices in Barrow Street.

The Minister for Enterprise, Trade & Employment, Micheál Martin, said the jobs commitment confirms Ireland is a leading European location for Internet activities.

The new positions are in engineering, operations and IT, sales, finance, legal, administration and HR.

The company's Dublin base serves customers in 35 languages.

Started by two PhD students in 1998, Google is now the giant of the Internet.
