Just 10% of appeals against planning permission for mobile phone masts have been successful in the past three years, according to An Bord Pleanála.

The board's chairman, John O'Connor, told the Oireachtas Environment Committee today that between January 2003 and October 2006 there were 84 appeals against decisions by planning authorities to grant permission for masts.

Mobile phone companies refused permission launched just under 200 appeals in the same period. Around 60% of these appeals were successful.
