The Fire Services are preparing for their busiest night of the year ahead of this evening's Hallowe'en celebrations.

The average firefighter's workload is expected to increase five-fold during the night's celebrations.

The Fire Services have pointed out that many bonfires - even the very smallest - will be considered illegal under the Waste Management Act.

Meanwhile, gardaí have stepped up their search and seizure operations for illegal fireworks.

They say it has always been an offence to import fireworks without a licence and even small quantities are taken very seriously.

New legislation means that it is now an offence for anyone to: light an unlicensed firework; throw a lit firework at a person or property; or possess an unlicensed firework with intent to sell or supply.
