There was an hour-long confrontation between opponents of the Corrib gas terminal project and gardaí in Co Mayo this morning.
About 300 members and supporters of the Shell to Sea campaign took part in a protest march on the road leading to the site.
A convoy of vehicles taking workers to the terminal was halted for about 20 minutes as protestors blocked the road by standing in front of the convoy of 20 vehicles.
A force of about 100 gardaí was brought in to clear the road as the demonstrators cheered and heckled the Shell workers and gardaí.
One man was arrested for alleged public order offences.
The demonstrators were staging a rally at the entrance to the terminal.
Shell to Sea is calling for a halt to the construction of the €200 million terminal because it says it presents an unacceptable health and safety risk to the area.
