Three people have been killed in two separate suicide attacks in Afghanistan.

In the southern town of Lashkar Gah, two children were killed and 10 others were wounded in an attack apparently aimed at NATO forces.

Among those wounded were three British troops who were serving with the NATO force.

Lashkar Gah is the capital of Helmand province, where most of the 5,000 British troops in Afghanistan are based.

A second attack in the southeastern city of Khost left one police officer dead.

Another five police officers were wounded when the suicide bomber detonated explosives next to a police vehicle.

NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer has insisted that suicide bombers will not defeat the military alliance's efforts to ensure democracy prevails in Afghanistan.

Over recent months NATO has faced a surge in violence linked to Taliban militants, which a US-led coalition toppled from government in 2001.

NATO has appealed for member states to provide additional soldiers to bolster the 31,000 troops currently stationed in the country.
