Eight dead in northern Iraq bombing

At least eight people have been killed in a suicide car bomb attack in the northern Iraqi town of Tal Afar.

A truck laden with explosives struck a house which was being used by soldiers as an observation post, killing four soldiers and four civilian bystanders.

Separately, two people were killed and four wounded after a series of mortar rounds struck a row of houses near Hilla, in the province of Babil.

And in the capital Baghdad, two men were shot dead in a Shia area in the west of the city.

More than 50,000 Iraqi and US troops are deployed around Baghdad in support of 'Operation Together Forward', a bid to combat the continuing sectarian violence.

US medic sentenced over Iraq killing

A US Navy medic has been sentenced to 10 years for his part in the killing of an Iraqi civilian, but will only serve one year after agreeing to give evidence against other marines charged with the killing.

Petty Officer Melson Bacos, testified that he and seven other marines abducted an Iraqi man and killed him before covering up the incident.

The 21-year-old said his patrol leader's anger at the release of a 'suspected terrorist' from Baghdad's Abu Ghraib prison prompted the murder.

Bacos had his sentence reduced to a year after the plea deal that saw him admit to kidnapping but cleared of murder.

Hashim Ibrahim Awad, 52, was shot a number of times in the head and had an AK-47 and shovel next placed to his body to suggest he was trying to plant a roadside bomb.

The killing in Hamdania on 26 April is one of a series of incidents that have tarnished the reputation of US troops in Iraq.
