The death has occurred of a former Ceann Comhairle of the Dáil, Tom Fitzpatrick.
Mr Fitzpatrick first served as a Fine Gael Senator in 1961 and four years later was elected to the Dáil for the Cavan/Monaghan constituency.
He was re-elected at every election until his retirement in 1989.
During his career he served in a variety of ministerial posts including Land, Transport & Power as well as Fisheries and Forestry from 1981 to 1982.
He served as Ceann Comhairle from 1984 until 1987 and retired two years later.
Born in Scotshouse, Co Monaghan, Mr Fitzpatrick was 88 years of age. He had qualified as a solicitor and is survived by his wife Carmel, daughter Geraldine and son Tom.
