Jack Straw - Powell's advice was ignored

The former British Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw, has described the current situation in Iraq as dire.

Mr Straw, who is now the Leader of the House of Commons, said he blamed mistakes made by the United States government in the aftermath of the invasion in 2003 for the difficulties being experienced now.

He made his remarks on the BBC One television programme, Question Time, last night.

He told the audience he believed the advice of the then US Secretary of State, Colin Powell had been ignored within the wider Bush administration.
