Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is to meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the coming days.

Israel Radio said Mr Olmert made the statement in an interview.

It added that the Israeli leader said he was exerting great effort in order to start a dialogue with Mr Abbas.

'I have told him that I am ready to meet him. I do not set any conditions but do not accept that conditions are imposed on me.'

Mr Olmert also said that he would not consider freeing Palestinian prisoners before an Israeli soldier held captive in Gaza is released.

Mr Olmert and Mr Abbas last met in an informal meeting in Jordan on 22 June.

Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit was captured from Gaza in a cross-border raid by militants on 25 June.

Both leaders have said during the past month that they are ready to meet each other, but no date for the meeting had been set.
