The new national taxi fare structures came into effect at midnight.
The regulations, which have been the cause of repeated protests and work stoppages in recent months, were introduced following extended talks between the three main taxi unions and SIPTU.
The new basic fare of €3.80 during the day and €4.10 at night, supplemented by distance or time-related charges, will apply to taxi journeys nationwide.
Most of the extra charges, including airport and luggage charges, will be abolished.
The Taxi Regulator, Ger Deering, has warned that over the next three weeks, there may be 'some confusion' about taxi fares.
Drivers have been given 21 days to change over to the new regulations.
They have until 16 October to be fully compliant with the new fares and regulations.
