Minister for Agriculture Mary Coughlan has confirmed that many farmers will be paid part of their annual EU subsidy earlier than planned this year.

The decision was made due to adverse weather during the summer.

The EU has agreed to her request to make advance payments, at a rate of 50%, to applicants with effect from October 16.

Balancing payments will be made with effect from December 1.

Farm groups have welcomed the decision.
