More than 2,000 people attended a meeting in Monaghan town last night to protest against proposed changes at Monaghan General Hospital.

The meeting was organised by the town council in response to proposals to withdraw all acute services from the facility.

Speaking to RTÉ Radio, Chris Lyons, Network Manager of the Health Service Executive's North-East Hospital Group, said any suggestion that the hospital was being closed down could not be further from the truth.

One of the organisers of the meeting, Peadar McMahon said spirits in the campaign were high following the turnout last night.
