Damascus - Attack at embassy foiled

Syria has accused the United States of fueling extremism and terrorism in the Middle East, despite being praised by Washington for preventing an attack on the US embassy in Damascus yesterday.

Last night Syria's embassy in Washington issued a statement, saying that what has happened recently in Lebanon, the Palestinian territories and Iraq was hindering the fight against global terrorism.

However, White House spokesman Tony Snow, while acknowledging Syria's effort yesterday, said the authorities in Damascus needed to do more throughout the region.
