The leaders of the three main taxi unions met with officials from the Department of Transport this afternoon.

Afterwards, a Department spokesperson said the taxi groups had raised the question of an appeals mechanism for regulations applied to the taxi sector.

In response, the department drew attention to the consultation process that is currently underway in regard to appeals mechanisms generally.

The spokesperson said the department did not comment on any decision taken by the taxi regulator because the regulator's office is an independent body.

John Ussher, president of the Irish Taxi Drivers Federation, described the meeting as positive.

Mr Ussher added that the three organisations would meet to formulate a position and hoped to have a further meeting with Taxi Regulator Ger Deering.

However, taxi drivers have said they can not rule out further strike action, including disruption to next week's Ryder Cup.

Yesterday up to 1,000 drivers blocked much of O'Connell Street in Dublin leading to huge traffic delays.

Yesterday’s protest was the fourth by taxi drivers since July.

The drivers are unhappy with fare changes which were put in place by the Taxi Regulator, and which are set to come into force on 25 September.

Fine Gael's transport spokesperson Olivia Mitchell said gardaí should have moved or arrested the protesting taxi drivers.

On RTÉ Radio’s Morning Ireland, Ms Mitchell said the action was unwarranted.
