Gordon Brown - Criticised by Charles Clarke

The British former Home Secretary, Charles Clarke, has accused Chancellor Gordon Brown of being 'absolutely stupid' during the recent dispute over the leadership of the Labour Party.

Mr Clarke said people were angry at photos of Mr Brown smiling broadly as he left Downing Street after meeting the Prime Minister, Tony Blair, on Wednesday.

He said Mr Brown should have distanced himself from Labour's backbench MPs who sparked the leadership crisis by calling for Tony Blair to quit as prime minister immediately.

He said Mr Brown had to prove his ability to lead the party and the country.

Britain's Minister for Justice Harriet Harman has warned that the infighting could see Labour losing power to the Tories.
