The United Nations has warned Sudan's government it will be held accountable for the humanitarian situation in Darfur if the pullout of African Union peacekeepers affects aid efforts to the region.

African Union troops said they will leave Darfur at the end of this month when their mandate expires raising fears that the region could be plunged into an all out war.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan told journalists in the Egyptian port city of Alexandria that Sudan's decision to expel troops was not 'entirely positive' and he warned Khartoum it would be held responsible for any worsening of the humanitarian crisis.

The African Union's mandate to police a ceasefire in Darfur expires at the end of the month and the pan-African body has said without a major infusion of cash it could not continue any longer.
