The Iraqi authorities say they have arrested the second-in-command of al-Qaeda in Iraq.
The country's Interior Ministry said the man, Hamed Juma Faris al-Suaidi, was detained a few days ago.
He is also known as Abu Humam or Abu Rana.
An official said he was hiding in a building north of Baquba.
The US military said that al-Suaidi was a prime instigator of sectarian conflict between Sunnis and Shias in Iraq.
