Sudan has rejected a UN resolution calling for a peacekeeping force to be deployed in the western region of Darfur.

The Sudanese President, Omar al-Bashir, said his country would not consent to any resolution that violated its sovereignty.

Yesterday, the UN Security Council voted to deploy 17,500 soldiers and 3,000 police to Darfur.

China, Russia and Qatar abstained, saying they supported the contents of the resolution but wanted Sudan's consent before adopting it.

Killings, rape and displacement are continuing in the region despite the presence of African Union peacekeepers.

The UN says at least 200,000 people have been killed and more than 2m people displaced since fighting began three years ago.
