British police have been given more time to question 23 suspects about an alleged plot to bomb passenger jets.

The extension was granted tonight after a day-long court hearing. 21 suspects can be held for seven days, two others for five more days.

Yesterday, police arrested another person in the Thames Valley area.

A Washington-bound United Airlines flight from London was earlier diverted to Boston after a confrontation involving a passenger.

The flight was escorted by fighter jets and landed at Boston's Logan airport.  All baggage on board was later searched.

There are conflicting reports that the disruptive passenger, a woman, was carrying matches, a screwdriver, Vaseline, or notes referring to Al-Qaeda.

EU Justice Commissioner Franco Frattini said this afternoon he would present concrete proposals to EU members on the detection of liquid explosives at airports.

He was speaking in London after meeting the British Home Secretary and other EU interior ministers.

Mr Frattini also said the EU would crackdown on internet websites promoting or glorifying terrorism.

The British Home Secretary, John Reid, said Europe faces a persistent and very real threat from terrorism.

Mr Reid also called for greater co-ordination of security measures across Europe.

He was speaking after a meeting of the six EU ministers in London in the wake of an alleged plan to bomb transatlantic flights.

Mr Frattini said they were looking at improving the flow of information about investigations between police in European countries.

Ministers from Finland, Slovenia, Portugal, Germany and France attended the talks.

Finland holds the EU presidency at present while the other four states will take over the rotating presidency over the next two years.
