Ireland's Derval O'Rourke has won the silver medal in the European Championships 100 metres hurdles final in Gothenburg.

President McAleese extended her sincere congratulations to Ms O'Rourke and said her second place finish was a 'superb athletic achievement'.

The Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, John O'Donoghue, said that along her gold medal at the World Indoor Championships in Moscow in March, Derval O'Rourke had elevated her status to that of a world class athlete in 2006.

Her time of 12.72 seconds in this evening's final was a new Irish record.

She secured second place in a photo finish ahead of Kirsten Bolm of Germany. The race was won by Sweden's Susanna Kallur in 12.59 seconds.
