France and the US, backed by other key UN Security Council members, have agreed on a new draft resolution aimed at ending the month-old conflict in Lebanon.
This latest document calls for an immediate 'cessation of hostilities' followed by a phased Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon as peacekeepers move in.
The full 15-nation UNSC was expected to vote on the draft resolution tonight.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is reviewing the document. It is reported he will urge his cabinet to approve the UN resolution at a meeting on Sunday.
The US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, has flown to New York in anticipation of a vote.
Ms Rice has held talks with British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
At least 1,024 people have been killed in Lebanon and another million have been displaced in the 31-day-old conflict.
123 Israelis have been killed since the war began after Hezbollah seized two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border raid on 12 July.
