Eight killed in Iraq violence

At least eight people have been killed and 25 wounded in attacks across Iraq.

Five civilians died and 20 were injured in a rocket attack on a three-storey building near a mosque in Baquba, north of Baghdad.

East of Baghdad, a bomb targeting a US patrol left one person dead and another injured.

While in Basra, an Iraqi army colonel was shot dead on his way to work.

In Kirkuk, two separate roadside bombs killed one civilian and left four others wounded.

The 4th Iraqi Army Division was handed lead responsibility for security in Kirkuk province on Tuesday, although US troops from the 101st Airborne Division remain in the area.

US military helicopter crashes in Iraq

Two US troops are missing after a US military helicopter with six soldiers on board crashed in western Iraq.

The US military said the helicopter was attached to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. It crashed in the province of al-Anbar, and search and rescue efforts are ongoing.

The 130,000-strong US force in Iraq relies extensively on helicopters to transport troops and supplies, survey territory and carry out air strikes on insurgent forces.

Many of the roads around the country are not regarded as safe for ground convoys because of the risk of roadside bombs and ambushes.
