Roches Stores - 91 jobs to go in sale of chain

The Mandate trade union, which represents workers at Roches Stores, has said it will meet company management next week to discuss the sale of its stores to Debenhams and Marks & Spencer.

The deal with the British chain stores is worth €29m and will result in the loss of 91 jobs.

Debenhams will take over nine Roches Stores outlets throughout the country, while Marks & Spencer will take control of the company's store at the Wilton Shopping Centre near Cork city.

Roches Stores will continue to own the buildings.

The Mandate union said its talks with Roches Stores management will centre on a number of issues including the maintenance of existing terms and conditions for staff in their new employments.

The union said it also wanted the 91 staff, who are due to lose their jobs, to be given the option of redeployment within the new set up.

Debenhams already has stores in Dublin, Cork and Newbridge, Co Kildare.

It plans to convert the new outlets over the next six to 12 months.

Roches Stores, which employed 2,000 people at the 11 stores, says the remaining staff will transfer to Debenhams and Marks & Spencer.

A statement from Roches Stores said the deal was subject to Competition Authority approval, but full transfer of the stores was expected by 6 September.

All stores will trade normally as Roches Stores up to this date.
It said its main aim was to sell the business as a going concern to protect the maximum number of jobs.
