There has been widespread condemnation of yesterday's Israeli attack on the southern Lebanese town of Qana.
The UN Security Council expressed extreme shock and distress at the attack and deplored the loss of life.
The statement was approved unanimously at an emergency session of the 15-member council.
At the same time, Lebanon is observing a national day of mourning for the victims of the bombardment of Qana.
Banks and public offices are closed and flags are flying at half mast in memory of those killed.
It was the biggest single loss of life since Israel unleashed its firepower on Lebanon almost three weeks ago.
Large pictures of dead children being retrieved from under the rubble in Qana were splashed across Lebanese newspapers, some framed in black in a sign of mourning.
Israeli planes attacked a residential building where civilians were sheltering in the attack.
30 children were among those killed.
Israel has halted its air strikes for 48 hours pending an investigation.
Israeli Justice Minister Haim Ramon told Israeli Army Radio: 'This decision will allow us to continue the war over time and it will take off some of the political pressure, so I am sure this is the right decision for now. It is not stopping the war.'
This morning, it was reported that Israeli military fire killed one Lebanese soldier and injured three others in south Lebanon.
