At least two people have been killed after Hezbollah militants launched rockets at the Israeli city of Haifa.

Emergency officials said at least 14 others were seriously injured after the rockets hit at least two apartments in the city.

A UN observer was wounded in southern Lebanon by gunfire attributed to Hezbollah.

Israeli air strikes hit Sidon for the first time

Israeli air strikes, meanwhile, continue to pound cities in Lebanon including Tyre and the capital, Beirut, and for the first time the southern port city of Sidon.

The airstrikes have reportedly killed at least five people, including a Lebanese photojournalist.

14 people were injured in Sidon and a mosque was destroyed.

The bombings come after Israeli forces announced overnight that they had taken control of the village of Maroun al-Ras on the Lebanese border after days of fighting.

Israel said six of its soldiers were killed in the fighting but that Hezbollah suffered dozens of casualties.

Hezbollah fired more than 40 rockets into Israel yesterday hitting towns across the north of the country, injuring 16 people.

Overseas nationals still being evacuated

With the conflict continuing, ships and aircraft continued to evacuate overseas nationals from Lebanon today, taking more people fleeing the fighting to safety in Cyprus.

About 14 vessels were expected to dock at the Cypriot ports of Larnaca and Limassol for a mass evacuation that has already involved more than 25,000 people from dozens of countries and show no signs of slowing.

The situation in Lebanon has displaced half a million people, others are trapped by fighting, especially in border villages.
