Recycling charges are to drop

Recycling charges for many electrical and electronic goods are to be reduced.

The move follows an independent review of the charges, which were introduced last year to cover the cost of recycling household appliances.

The reductions will come into effect from the beginning of next month.

Since the introduction of an EU Directive a year ago, consumers can bring old household appliances to civic amenity centres and shops for recycling when buying replacements.

The scheme has been so successful that Ireland is two years ahead of schedule in meeting EU targets.

However, consumers have had to foot the bill because recycling charges were introduced to cover goods bought before the directive became law.

However, today it was announced that many of the charges are to be reduced following a review by the national compliance scheme for electrical recycling, WEEE Ireland.

The recycling charge for washing machines, dishwashers and gas cookers will be halved from €20 to €10 while charges for toasters and blenders will drop from €2 to €1.
