59 killed in Iraqi market attack

At least 59 people have been killed in a car bomb attack in the southern Iraqi city of Kufa.

Another 132 people were injured in the attack, which apparently targeted a group of labourers in a crowded market.

Kufa is near the holy city of Najaf, 160km south of Baghdad.

The attack sparked brief clashes between protestors and police, who fired into the air to disperse the onlookers and confused scenes ensued.

Earlier this month, a suicide car bomber blasted two coach-loads of Iranian pilgrims in Kufa, killing ten people and injuring 40.
