Motorola to cut around 30 jobs in Cork

The mobile phone maker, Motorola, is to shed around 30 jobs at its research and development centre at Mahon in Cork.

Motorola employs around 500 people in software development and semi-conductor design at its Mahon plant. Last April the company told staff it was seeking voluntary redundancies.

Motorola would not comment publicly on numbers, but it is understood the company told staff that between 30 and 150 jobs would be cut.

The company has confirmed that negotiations on redundancies have now been completed, and what it described as 'a small number' of staff will leave its Cork plant voluntarily.

Motorola has not confirmed the figure, but it is understood that it is less than 30, significantly better than the 150 predicted in April.
