Two sentenced over UVF membership

Two men from Liverpool were sentenced in court in Manchester today for membership of the Ulster Volunteer Force.

47-year-old Roy Barwise and 43-year-old John Irwin, both from Anfield, were part of the 'Liverpool Battalion' of the UVF and senior members of the Belfast terrorist organisation.

Both men, involved with Orange Lodges in Liverpool, pleaded guilty at Manchester Crown Court yesterday to being members of a proscribed organisation.

Father-of-two Barwise also pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of ammunition, possession of firearms and explosives and supplying ammunition.

Explosives, a machine gun, pistols, shotguns and hundreds of rounds of ammunition were found by police following raids on Merseyside in July of last year.
