Louth officials remove acid diesel sludge

Officials from Louth County Council have removed over 36 tonnes of acid diesel sludge which had been abandoned in containers on a lorry under the M1 motorway.

It is believed the lorry was driven from Northern Ireland and abandoned under a bridge at the Dunleear exit.

The highly toxic sludge is left over when cheaper agricultural diesel is 'washed' to remove a marker dye and then sold on as more expensive road diesel.

The sludge will now be sent to Germany for disposal.
