Condoleezza Rice - Makes warning to Israel

The Israeli air force has destroyed a bridge in the Gaza Strip in a bid to stop Palestinian militants moving a captured Israeli soldier.

Corporal Gilad Shalit, 19, was abducted by Palestinian militants on Sunday when they raided an Israeli army post near Gaza.

Earlier today, a Palestinian militant group has said that he is being held in a secure place.

It is the first time that any information on the hostage has been released.

The group said that the soldier would be held until conditions for his release are met.

The Israelis have said they will not negotiate to secure the soldier's freedom.

There have been unconfirmed reports tonight that Israeli tanks which were gathered on the border with Gaza have begun moving.

The US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, has warned Israel against the use of violence to win the release of Corporal Shalit.

She said there was a 'concerted international effort' underway to secure the release of the soldier.

Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, said Israel was preparing for an 'extensive and aggressive' operation using all means at its disposal.

However, he insisted that he is still committed to negotiations with Palestinians despite the 'difficult circumstances' posed by the kidnapping.
