The Minister for Agriculture has said a new agreement on world trade must not necessitate a further reform of the Common Agricultural Policy.
Speaking at an agricultural showcase in Co Kilkenny, Mary Couglan said that while the Government wants a new world agreement it must be fair and balanced.
Thousands of farmers from all over the country are attending the showcase at Kildalton College, Piltown, south Kilkenny, today.
It is organised by the State farm body, Teagasc, to help farmers assess the 'fundamental shifts' that are occurring in rural Ireland.
The training, advisory and research divisions of Teagasc are helping farmers to evaluate their options following the major changes in farming, the food sector and rural life.
Apart from the beef, dairy, tillage and sheep sectors - there is also a major focus on alternative energy crops and on the environment.
