Two former TDs, one from Fianna Fáil and one from Fine Gael, and both publicans, have died.

The death occurred in Co Limerick of Mick Herbert, a former Fianna Fáil TD and MEP. He was 81.

Mr Herbert, who was a publican in the Castleconnell/Ahane area of Limerick, was an inter-county hurler and served for three terms as a TD for Limerick East.

He is survived by his wife Bríd and his eight children.

And the former Fine Gael TD and senator Luke Belton has died in Dublin.  He was 87.

Originally from Rathcline, Co Longford, and a publican by trade, Mr Belton was first elected to Dublin North Central in 1965 and was a TD until 1981.

He successfully changed constituency in 1977 when he was elected to Dublin (Finglas) alongside the then first-time TD Bertie Ahern.

Mr Belton was a member of the Seanad between 1982 and 1987.
