Saddam Hussein - Trial in final stages

Prosecutors in the trial of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein have called on the judge to sentence him to death.

Saddam Hussein, his half-brother and co-accused Barzan al-Tikriti and six other defendants face death by hanging if found guilty for their roles in the killing of 148 Shias in Dujail in 1982.

The former leader has admitted to ordering the execution of the villagers but has claimed it was his legal right to do so as Iraq was at war with Iran at the time.

The killings followed an assassination attempt on Saddam Hussein in the village.

Chief Judge Raouf Abdel Rahman adjourned the trial until 10 July when the defence team is due to deliver its final remarks.
