The Tánaiste and Minister for Health, Mary Harney has said the recommendation that the Mater Hospital become the location for the new national children's hospital will be brought to Cabinet shortly.

Speaking in Gorey tonight, the minister expressed disappointment that two big Dublin hospitals said they could not support the recommendation.

The boards of Our Lady's Hospital in Crumlin and St James's Hospital have written to Ms Harney saying that independent international experts must be appointed to review the recommendation.

The boards also called for a decision by the Cabinet to be deferred until this review is complete.

Crumlin hospital has described the HSE taskforce report which recommended the Mater as an 'incomplete and superficial' analysis that failed to examine the clinical differences between St James's Hospital and the Mater.

In its letter to Ms Harney, Crumlin said the basis of such a major decision must be transparent for parents, families, local communities, politicians and hospital staff.

Crumlin said there was insufficient clarity and information in the taskforce report to enable the hospital to currently support the recommendations.

In its letter, St James's Hospital said the process under which the taskforce reached its conclusions was 'fatally flawed'. It said the site at St James's was four times the size of the Mater Hospital site.

It also said that the breath and depth of clinical services provided at St James's was not properly considered.
