Serbia formalises Montenegro split

Serbia has formally acknowledged its separation from Montenegro after the Adriatic republic declared independence on Saturday.

That followed the 21 May referendum vote to end their 88-year partnership.

A special session of parliament in Belgrade adopted a motion to 'establish that Serbia has become the successor of the state union of Serbia and Montenegro'.

Serbia did not want the split but will not oppose it.

The state union flag has already disappeared from the Serbian parliament building and the Serbian flag was to be raised in its place today.

The president and prime minister were absent.
