Political parties in Northern Ireland have agreed to participate in Assembly Committee announced by the Northern Secretary Peter Hain last week, the Northern Ireland Office has announced.

The committee will hold its first meeting next Tuesday.

Nominations to the committee have to be lodged with the Speaker's office by 5pm tomorrow.

The four main parties – DUP, UUP, SDLP and Sinn Féin – will have three seats each while the Alliance Party will have two.

Sinn Fein's chief negotiator Martin McGuinness has said he will probably lead his party's delegation.

However it is believed the DUP is unlikely to nominate its party leader or deputy leader.

The Ulster Unionist MLAs who met this morning have yet to decide who they will nominate.

The SDLP will probably be represented by senior members.

SDLP leader Mark Durkan wrote to Mr Hain confirming his party's involvement, but called on the minister to be more specific about the role of the committee.

The Foyle MP said 'the SDLP are particularly concerned in that regard to ensure that this committee is not used as a vehicle for the DUP or anybody else to set preconditions for the restoration of the Agreement's institutions.

'We are equally concerned to ensure that parties working in good faith do not find themselves in a side-show of inclusion on this committee while other parties are negotiating separately and differently with governments.

'The SDLP believes that the Secretary of State's approach to the formation of the committee has involved some conflicting signals, which have reinforced such concerns.'
