Contact lost with UN peacekeepers in Congo

The United Nations mission in Congo said today it had lost contact with six Nepalese UN peacekeepers involved in an operation against militia fighters in the east of the central African country.

A UN spokesperson in the former Belgian colony said they had lost contact with the men and they were in a very difficult situation.

'They were surrounded but they we have sent in reinforcements,' he said, adding that UN helicopter gunships had been sent to the area.
