Fine Gael Leader Enda Kenny has said Ireland must not agree to a World Trade Organisation deal which would make farming in Ireland commercially unviable.

At a meeting with IFA representatives in Portlaoise, Co Laois, Mr Kenny expressed what he said was his 'real concern' that Irish farmers would once again be used as a pawn to secure a deal at the WTO talks.

Mr Kenny said he is genuinely concerned that, in recent months, some within the European Commission seem to be softening their position in relation to their negotiating stance at the talks.

He also accused European Union Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson of botching the handling of the EU's position in the trade talks.
