A large fire in the cargo section of Istanbul's Ataturk airport has been brought under control.

Three people were injured, and air traffic was delayed when the fire broke out.

Tonight a radical Kurdish group claimed responsibility for the blaze.

Earlier, airport officials said it was probably caused by a short circuit, or sparks from a welding machine.

Dozens of firefighters rushed to the scene to battle the flames engulfing Terminal C, which is some distance from the international and domestic flights terminal.

Two fire-fighting planes also aided the effort to douse the flames.

Some incoming planes were ordered to delay their landing while others were re-routed to the city's second airport on the Asian side of the Bosphorus Strait.

The terminal was badly damaged, with windows blown out and part of the roof caved in.
