Volcano evacuation order on Java

Thousands of people living on the slopes of an active volcano on the Indonesian island of Java have been told they must leave following warnings of an imminent eruption.

The volcano, Mount Merapi, has been rumbling ominously for weeks, and is described by geologists as being in a state of constant lava flow.

Authorities in Java decided on a compulsory evacuation after weeks of preparations and warnings.
